I adopted "REX", a longhaired Daschund, in mid March,
and brought him home to Canada. I wanted to let you know after almost 6 weeks
he is doing very well considering what he had been through. At my son's urging
"REX" now
answers happily to "Oscar". Of Course. There must me a million wiener dogs out
there named Oscar, but he really does suit it! The first night I got him home I
let him into the back yard and he would NOT come back. What an
IDIOT I was. I should have kept him on a leash until he felt comfortable
with me us -- instead we had the family in the backyard with search lights --
we finally found him cowering behind behind a shrub. Poor little guy.
He was so afraid. I brought an alternative trainer in and
she suggested I keep a short 4 foot leash on him
at all times to get control of him without having to grab or pick him up.
That worked like a charm. Good tip for rescue dog parents!
Today Oscar has gained almost 4 pounds eating home cooked meals, holistic canned
food, and
"Origens" a great dry food I encourage everyone to check out. He's been on omega
3-6-9, and sea greens for pets (Health food store carry it), as well as barley
powder. About 5 weeks in I noticed his horrible breathe wasn't going away, and
he had developed a horrible case of dandruff. So I took him to the vet thinking
Oscar had a
skin condition. Turns out the diet he's on is SO GOOD, he has begun shedding his
dry coat and skin and producing a new healthy one! The vet also noticed what
appears to be a burn mark in the back of his mouth -- possibly from an
electric fence wire. I can't imagine what he used to live like.
Oscar is such a sweetheart. He loves attention, and loves
to give me kisses. He's also warmed up to my teenaged son, and allows my
husband to pick him up -- although he still hides from my big, loud hubby on a
regular basis. Still -- he sleeps with us so he's coming around! Oscar has also
learned what the word "WALK" means, he can sit, and come, and is learning to
shake a paw. He loves to tear around the backyard, and roll in the grass. He is
kind to the birds, and doesn't chase them away -- just sits and watches
wondering what the heck those things are. I love my little Brat-wurst. He is
healing my heart after we lost our last dog to cancer. And we are healing his.
It was meant
to be. I knew you'd be wondering about him. I've attached a picture.
We're not in it -- but this is Oscar figuring out how to play with a toy
-- something else he didn't know how to do before.
